Scholz was a finance minister under the previous Merkel government. He is known as a meek but deft politician and takes the helm of the governing coalition further to the left than the incumbent. Formed as a result of strenuous negociations between the SPD, FDP and Alliance 90/The Greens, the coalition is known by the colour of their respective parties or the "traffic light coalition."
