Many politicians in Germany have PhDs or doctorates and are thus prefixed with a Dr. title. The previous chancellor of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel completed a doctorate in chemistry physics in East Germany before the Berlin wall fell. Politicians with doctorates are much less common in the English-speaking world.
